Charlotte summers are no joke. When temperatures rise during the summer months, exercising in the heat can be a real challenge. However, the heat doesn't have to derail your fitness routine. With the right strategies, you can still exercise safely all season long.
At ChiroWerx, Dr. Kyle helps patients in Charlotte stay healthy and pain-free year-round, and that includes making smart choices, even during extreme heat.
Time Your Outdoor Workouts Wisely
Timing is everything during a heatwave. Walking at 7 am feels very different from running at 2 pm. Why? Because the sun is most intense and temperatures reach their highest between 10 am and 4 pm.
We recommend planning your runs, walks, or bike rides for early morning or evening. Plus, you'll avoid the peak UV exposure that comes with midday sun.
During the summer, it’s worth making the shift. We promise your body will thank you.
Hydrate Before, During, and After
When you exercise in the heat, you need to continue to hydrate. Don't wait until you feel thirsty. By that point, you're already mildly dehydrated. Instead, drink water consistently throughout the day.
Here are a few simple hydration tips:
- Drink at least 16 oz of water before heading outside.
- Sip water throughout the entirety of the exercise.
- Replenish electrolytes after longer or more intense sessions.*
*Note on electrolytes: Especially when you’re exercising outside in the heat, you need to include electrolytes with your water since sweating depletes your body of important minerals. Without electrolytes, you can experience muscle cramps and poor fluid absorption, even when you’re drinking regular water.
Another benefit of regularly hydrating? Drinking water supports your muscles and joints, something Dr. Kyle emphasizes as part of overall musculoskeletal health.
Take Your Workout Indoors
Some days, it's simply too hot to be outside safely. On those days, consider your indoor workout options, such as these:
- Hit the gym for strength training or cardio machines.
- *Try a yoga or pilates class** to build flexibility and core strength.
- Follow an at-home workout on YouTube or using an app.
- Swim indoors at a local rec center or pool.
Your body will benefit from mixing up your routine and help prevent overuse injuries, a common issue Dr. Kyle treats at ChiroWerx.
Dress for the Heat
What you wear matters more than you might think. No matter the forecast, it’s always a good idea to wear sunscreen. For clothing, choose lightweight, moisture-wicking fabrics that pull sweat away from your skin rather than trap it. Light colors reflect sunlight rather than absorb it.
A hat and sunglasses add extra protection during outdoor activity. Small choices like these can make exercising in the heat more manageable.
Listen to Your Body
Above all, pay attention to how you feel. How you exercise on a cool weather day will feel different than exercising in the heat. Stop your activity immediately if you experience dizziness, nausea, or heavy fatigue. Move to a cool area, hydrate, and rest.
Heat exhaustion can come on quickly. Pushing through warning signs is never worth it. If there’s only one thing you take away from this post, let it be this: recovery always takes longer than prevention.
Exercising in the heat is absolutely possible with the right approach. Time your workouts, hydrate consistently, go indoors when needed, dress appropriately, and always listen to your body.
